Residential food scrap service is an important element needed to close the food loop. It will reduce the amount of food wasted in our "Florida Mountains" because it helps divert food scraps from the landfills.
What they don't tell you when signing up for a garbage service, is that food waste is responsible for up to 8% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. As food waste decomposes in a landfill, and does so in an anaerobic condition (usually at the bottom of a wet pile) it produces methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide. This decomposition process takes decades, as the methane leaks into the atmosphere.
Food waste requires energy, land, water, and labor to produce, store, harvest, transport, package, and sell. When we throw out food, we're throwing away precious resources that could have been used to feed hungry people.
